A Closer Look at 2 Really Cool Knapping Hammerstones I Found!
It has been quite a while since I last shot and posted a new video, so today while enjoying some time in my mancave, I decided to take a closer look at a couple really unique hammerstones that I found while walking in my favorite artifact field. I believe these were made and used as knapping tools to make arrowheads, knives, and scrapers. These types of artifacts go totally unnoticed by many folks that search for artifacts. Being a flintknapper for the last 39 years has helped me to recognize these tools as they are very similar to the tools I use, while knapping stone. The use wear is very obvious on these tools.

My Folding Flint Blade, Antler Handle Pocket Knives I've Made
Переглядів 730Рік тому
I thought last weeks video was going to be the last in the series, but a suggestion from a subscriber for me to shoot a video on my folding flint, antler handle pocket knives changed my mind. Here is a look, and a few stories behind the 6 folders that I have kept over the years. This idea came to me back in 1994. I still have the very first folder I made and improved the look and function great...
My Keeper Collection of Knives I've made over the Years!
Переглядів 564Рік тому
This will be my final video in my Keeper Case Collection series I have been producing over the last 14 weeks. I decided to do something a little different for this one, instead of showing another case of arrowheads I have knapped, this video will feature some knives I've made over the years. You will see my progress making these knives from small, crude little knives to beautiful large knives c...
5 Small Keeper Cases of Things I've Chipped! Glass, Johnstone, Slate, and Cahokia Points
Переглядів 436Рік тому
My number of Keeper cases has started to dwindle, so I thought I would show you 5 of my small cases. These are all early work and lots of variety here. Did you know that you can knap, shards of broken toilet tanks? I have a whole case of points I made using toilet tank or as we fondly call , "Johnstone". I have had these cases tucked away and I really enjoyed taking a look at them again. You wi...
My Keeper Case Collection of things I've Chipped plus a Bonus Case!

Here is this weeks Keeper Case to check out. This is the case I found hiding behind a couple of other cases I have featured and had forgotten all about it. Once I saw it, I remember those points immediately and it was great to see them all again. I also included a bonus case of Onondaga Points I made. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed making it.
My Keeper Case Collection of Things I've Chipped! Some Really Nice Ones!
Переглядів 395Рік тому
I have really been enjoying posting these videos of my Keeper case collection of the things I've chipped. This case was full of memories for me and most of the pieces in this case were made between 8 - 10 years ago. I was at the peak of my knapping ability at that time and I was even surprised when I handled these points as to how thin and well chipped I got them. I have a nice little corner of...
My Artifact Hunt on 4 17 2023! My Only search on this field!
Переглядів 601Рік тому
We had a good rain overnight so I decided to check the field I was looking on last week to see if I could find anything. I was surprised to see that the field was planted and rolled, so I knew this would be my only hunt on the field this season. I was happy to see that I was finally the first one on the field and the only tracks I saw were Deer tracks. I found a few things and had a good hunt. ...
My Keeper Case Collection of Paleo Points I have Chipped!

Here is another Keeper Case Collection video in the series. This one is really special as this case has some of the best Paleo Points I have ever made plus a killer Dalton point. This was one of the goals I had in mind when I decided to give knapping a try. Fluted points are one of the most challenging point types to make and have them look correct. I used a variety of materials in my quest to ...
April 11th, 2023 Artifact Hunt before Plowing and Planting!

Here is a last look on my favorite field to find artifacts on. My timing could have been a little better because as I was looking the field the farmer showed up and began dragging the field to prep it for planting. I knew I should have gone yesterday but I still managed to find a few things. I was glad to have the chance to visit with the farmer as the original owner I had permission from sold ...
My Keeper Collection of Things I've Chipped! The Big Ones!

Still sticking with my Keeper Collection of things I've chipped, this week I focus on 4 of the largest blades I have ever chipped. This is a shorter video but the blades are longer. I used a variety of materials to make these blades. 2 of them are chipped out of heat-treated Novaculite (which is Arkansas wetstone), one is from a large raw piece of chert from Texas, and the last one is made out ...
My Keeper Case Collection of Things I've Chipped out of Obsidian! Nature's Glass!
Переглядів 542Рік тому
In this video you will see some things I've made using obsidian. Obsidian is natures glass and comes from volcanic eruptions. The raw edge of an obsidian flake can be up 500 times sharper than a surgeons scalpel. To be honest, it is not my favorite stone to work as I always get cuts and little shards in my fingers, but the beauty of the stone is outstanding. There are some pretty big pieces in ...

A Surprise Find During My Morning Hike!
Переглядів 412Рік тому
After walking the woods in my area since January, this morning I finally found what I was hoping to find. It has been an off year for finding shed Deer antlers as I haven't heard of many being found. I decided to check on an area where I had previously found a shed a couple years ago and sure enough there was this little antler laying there waiting to come home with me. It is a pretty small one...
My 3 Earliest Keeper Cases! The Beginning!
Переглядів 491Рік тому
I'm back with another video that features my 3 earliest keeper cases. These show my humble beginnings and how far I have come since I made my first points using chips that I found on sites I was looking for arrowheads and artifacts on. These early points were the best I could do at the time as I had much to learn and needed larger pieces of rock to work with. I hope this video will inspire you ...
Keeper Case #5 of the Things I've Chipped, Flintridge Chalcedony, The Beautiful Stone!

If you like colorful rock, then this case is for you. Flintridge Chalcedony is some of the most beautiful knappable rock in the United States. It occurs in a ridge between Zanesville and Columbus, Ohio and was widely used and traded by Native flintknappers from Paleo to Woodland pe...

I have several, probably close to a hundred stones that were obvious hammer stones. They were the only quartzite stones in a sea of sandstone, basalt and flakes. They all have the same basic shape. I have also found perfectly flat rocks, I'd assume to form the quartzite rocks to shape. It almost seemed like a factory in a huge area in southern Utah. They shaped the hammer stones in mass production, of all sizes, then used those in a different area to make the points. I even tested my theory by, instead of looking for flakes, I'd look for the hammer stones and viola! Surrounded by a sea of flakes. Each stone has pecking.

Superb craftmanship and something to aspire to. I'm having problems getting pressure flakes to run any distance on a similar flint material which means the edges quickly become too steep. Any tips you can share please. Tried all sorts but they just don't seem to want to go so it must be me.

I also had that same problem getting flakes to run farther, but I eventually learned to use my antler billet longer to drive thinning flakes much further than I could pressure flake them. I have a couple of good videos in my playlists you may want to check out. I show exactly how I thin the pieces and I keep things simple. Good Luck!

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52 Місяць тому

Copper was used by Native people in my area of the Northeast. There is even a picture of a copper pressure flaker that was found and shown in the Archaeology of New York State. I mainly use antler for percussion and sometimes pressure flaking. Some knappers use all copper tools so I am using mostly abo techniques. I also use hammerstones for percussion flaking. So what I do is not a shame but a recreation of techniques and tools that were possibly used by early knappers.

I am glad we don't wash with gasoline powered Maytag washing machines. I shudder to think what we would happen to the air quality on a Saturday wash day in suburbia if everyone did wash this way. Electric much better

Hi ken, you probably don't know me, i feel like I know you, I've watched you so much and I love hammer stones, but why I am commenting is i just came across creek Dalton's video on that rock with the hole in it, pretty amazing it is , i also saw your comment, also there's a newer comment 6 years old now from an archaeologist that knew what it was, he said it was a loom waight, pretty cool, just thought I would see if you had seen that, i think he could start his own museum .

Very late note: ACTUAL bird-stones have smooth rather than sharp-ridged centerlines... Perhaps you imagined such ridges from having used side references only for your intended reproductions.
